For some dogs, a visit to the veterinary clinic can be overwhelming. Unfamiliar smells, sounds, handling, and past experiences can trigger fear or anxiety—even before they walk through the door. Pre-visit pharmaceuticals (PVPs) are prescribed medications given at home before an appointment to help reduce this stress.
These medications do not sedate your dog or change who they are. Instead, they take the edge off fear and panic, allowing your dog to feel calmer, more relaxed, and better able to cope with the visit.
When a pet is extremely anxious, stress hormones can affect heart rate, blood pressure, and even lab results. A calmer pet helps us provide better medical care.
Anxiety during vet visits is not a behavior problem—it’s an emotional response. Using pre-visit pharmaceuticals is a proactive, compassionate choice that helps prevent fear from escalating over time. Positive, low-stress visits also reduce the likelihood that anxiety will worsen with each appointment. Our goal is always the same: to make veterinary care as calm, safe, and positive as possible, especially for pets who find visits challenging.
