Advanced Veterinary Ultrasound Services at The Barn Door Veterinary Care

Ultrasound imaging technology provides the doctors at The Barn Door Veterinary Care with a non-invasive way to discover what’s going on inside your pet’s body so that we can diagnose potential health concerns. Ultrasound imaging is safe, painless, and produces highly accurate images that enable us to determine how your pet’s body is functioning internally.

This advanced technology allows our veterinary team to visualize internal organs and structures with remarkable clarity, offering crucial insights that may not be visible through traditional examination methods or even X-rays.

We are excited to offer convenient, in-clinic abdominal ultrasound service as part of our comprehensive diagnostic services. This addition to our practice demonstrates our commitment to providing the highest standard of veterinary care using modern, evidence-based techniques right here in our facility.

How Does Veterinary Ultrasound Work?

This advanced imaging technique uses sound waves to create detailed images of the abdominal cavity, offering valuable insights into the health of key organs such as the liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, bladder, and intestines. The images are then reviewed by a board-certified veterinary radiologist and a complete report is provided.

During an ultrasound procedure, a small probe called a transducer is gently moved over your pet’s skin. This device emits high-frequency sound waves that bounce off internal structures and create real-time images.

The detailed images produced allow our veterinarians to examine the size, shape, position, and texture of your pet’s internal organs with remarkable precision. We can observe blood flow patterns, identify abnormal growths, and even detect subtle changes in tissue that might indicate early-stage disease before clinical symptoms become apparent.

What Can Veterinary Ultrasound Be Used to Diagnose?

Ultrasound is particularly valuable for identifying abnormalities like tumors, cysts, inflammation, fluid accumulation and foreign objects. It can also assist in monitoring ongoing conditions, guiding biopsies, and planning treatments with precision.

Some of the many conditions ultrasound imaging can be used to identify, diagnose, and manage include:

  • Heart disease, including valvular issues, cardiac masses, and congenital abnormalities
  • Tumors and masses in various organs and tissues
  • Bladder and/or kidney stones, including size, number, and precise location
  • Diseases of the organs (liver, kidney, gallbladder, pancreas, etc.)
  • Gastrointestinal concerns, including obstructions, inflammation, and structural abnormalities
  • Reproductive system evaluation, including pregnancy confirmation and fetal assessment
  • Lymph node changes that might indicate infection or cancer
  • Fluid accumulation in the abdomen, chest, or around organs
  • Foreign body detection that might be missed on traditional X-rays

For pets with chronic conditions, regular ultrasound monitoring allows us to track disease progression and adjust treatment protocols accordingly. This personalized approach ensures your pet receives the precise care they need at every stage of their health journey.

Will an Ultrasound Hurt My Pet?

Performed by our skilled veterinary team, this gentle and stress-free exam ensures your pet’s comfort throughout the process. Most ultrasound procedures require minimal preparation. For abdominal ultrasounds, your pet may need to fast for a few hours beforehand to optimize image quality. Our team will provide you with specific preparation instructions when you schedule your appointment.

Unlike many diagnostic procedures, ultrasound typically requires no sedation or anesthesia, allowing your pet to return to normal activities immediately after their examination. This makes ultrasound an ideal choice for pets who might be poor candidates for anesthesia due to age or existing health conditions. And unlike X-rays, ultrasound technology doesn’t use radiation, making it exceptionally safe for pets of all ages, including senior animals and pregnant females.
