Common Dog Care Mistakes

November 1, 2024

Did you know that 44.5% of American families have dogs? Fido has a way of completing our small (or not-so-small) households and making them feel more like home. While we love all animals, our canine buddies stand out for their love, commitment, and unique personalities. However, Fido requires a lot of love and attention to thrive. Continue reading to learn about some of the most common dog-care mistakes from a Port Moody, British Columbia vet.

Insufficient Training

Fido is a good boy, but he needs more training to learn what is and is not proper petiquette. Training should start the day you bring your dog home. While you don’t have to teach your four-legged friend complicated commands or cute tricks, he should master the basics: Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down.

Forgetting Paw and Nail Care

Sometimes the little things aren’t that little. That is definitely the situation here. Overgrown claws can affect how your four-legged friend moves and stands. They can make Fido more likely to slip and fall on slick surfaces, and also aggravate bone/joint problems.

Doggy dental care is also essential. Regarding that not-so-pearly-white smile, dental care is one of the most overlooked aspects of caring for Fido. Many of the dental difficulties that people face also affect our canine companions! Contact your veterinarian for further information.

Not Ensuring Your Canine Companion Gets Enough Exercise

Dogs, like humans, require daily exercise to remain healthy. The type and amount of exercise your dog needs will depend on his age, size, health, and, of course, preferences. At the very least, Fido will require a daily walk.

The benefits of a healthy puppy workout routine go far beyond simply keeping your canine buddy fit. This is also important for his mental and emotional wellness. Man’s Best Buddy would get bored being at home all the time. A change of scenery—and the chance to smell new flora and trees—is very enriching.

A solid doggy workout routine also helps your pet release tension. Fido will be more relaxed and probably tired after his stroll, run, or play session. That implies he’ll (hopefully) be more interested in taking a nap than tearing up your couch cushions.

Overfeeding Fido

Obesity is one of the most common conditions we see in our canine companions. More than half of our veterinary patients are, well, chonkers. Fido may look cute with some extra padding, but don’t be fooled. Carrying even a few extra pounds is bad for your pet’s health and well-being!

Here’s a partial list of the possible issues:

  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Problems
  • Anesthesia Complications
  • Arthritis
  • Respiratory Disease
  • Breathing Problems
  • Impaired Immune Function
  • Bladder Stones
  • Joint Problems
  • Kidney Disease
  • Musculoskeletal Disorders
  • Skin Conditions
  • Liver Problems
  • Lack Of Energy
  • Lower Quality Of Life
  • CCL Tears
  • Exercise Intolerance
  • Flatulence
  • Heat Sensitivity
  • Neoplasm

Obesity may also shorten Fido’s life. Keep an eye on your dog’s weight and nip any increase in the bud. Consult your veterinarian for specific recommendations on your pet’s nutritional and care needs.

Not Socializing Puppies

As the term implies, socializing entails ensuring that tiny Fido feels at ease and behaves appropriately in new settings and with new people. This must occur within a specified timeframe, usually between the ages of three and fourteen weeks. This is when your pet chooses what he believes about the world. Improper or inadequate socialization at this stage will have a big negative impact on your dog’s behavior as he matures. Dogs who have not been properly socialized are much more likely to exhibit behavioral issues as adults.

Overlooking Safety Concerns

Dogs are intelligent. Well, at least some of them are. We also have some adorable patients that aren’t exactly furry, barking geniuses. However, even the smartest pups have no idea what is and is not safe for them. Worse, their natural urges can sometimes bring them into trouble. A few simple recommendations can help prevent many tragic events.

Petproofing is crucial. Address anything that could be dangerous to your pet. This includes everything small or sharp, plastic bags and ties, personal items such as shoes and wallets, dangerous plants, chemicals, and medications.

Letting pets go unrestrained is also dangerous. When you leave your home, always keep your canine buddy leashed, unless he is in a guarded area.

Lack of Veterinary Care

Dogs, like humans, require regular care to maintain their health. Fido may prefer a walk to the dog park to a visit to our animal clinic, but veterinary care is essential for his health. All of our canine companions should be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and given routine preventative care. At home, keep an eye out for signs of illness. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, please contact your pet hospital immediately.

Not Paying Enough Attention To Fido

Dogs are incredibly loyal and affectionate. They have physically risked—and even sacrificed—their lives for their community. That persistent, unconditional friendship is a truly tremendous gift that has the ability to transform our lives dramatically. Fido doesn’t want for much, either: food, housing, and, most importantly, love. Spend time with your dog every day. This will help you as well! Time spent with pets is never wasted!
