Caring For A Timid Cat

October 15, 2024

Kitties are very lovable and personable little furballs. One reason that cats are so much fun is because they are all so unique and charismatic. Some are naturally friendly and outgoing, while others are very timid and shy. If your pet falls into the latter category, read on! A Coquitlam, British Columbia vet offers some advice on helping a scaredy-cat thrive in this article.

Take Time To Play

Playing serves several purrposes for cats: it keeps them fit, offers them entertainment, and lets them indulge their inner predators. It’s also a great confidence booster. Nailing that tricky run/jump/pounce is almost like the equivalent of scoring a home run for Fluffy. Plus, playing gives your pet a safe and appropriate way to work off any angst she is feeling.

Don’t Force Attention

The golden rule here? Never force attention on your cat, or make her feel trapped or cornered. This will just frighten her more! Our feline pals can be quite finicky about when and how they get held or petted. Let Fluffy come to you for attention. Win your furry friend over by talking to her in a calm tone of voice, and also by offering treats and catnip.

Avoid Negative Reinforcement

Kitties are wonderful pets, but they aren’t perfect. Nervous cats may also be more inclined to  undesired behavior, such as biting or litterbox avoidance. If Fluffy does something wrong, don’t punish her: that will only scare her, which could make matters worse.

Offer A Safe Retreat

Kitties naturally feel safer in small, enclosed spaces. Offer Fluffy spots to retreat to when she feels scared. Kitty condos and pet tents are great, but your pet will also appreciate things like paper bags and simple cardboard boxes. Even a spot behind a couch or under a bed can provide a safe haven. If you have a dog, give your feline friend some vertical space, such as a cat tower, to retreat to.

Avoid Overcrowding

Do you have more than one cat? If Fluffy is feeling uneasy because Mittens is bullying her, you may need to take steps to ease tensions. Make sure there is plenty of everything to go around, so your pets don’t have to fight over resources. Ask your vet for more information.
