Ozone Therapy For Pets

September 1, 2024

Here at Barn Door Veterinary Care, we are happy to offer both traditional and homeopathic veterinary treatments and also modern, hi-tech options. This allows us to offer our patients the best of both worlds. Ozone therapy certainly falls under that modern, cutting-edge category. We’re proud to offer this amazing and versatile treatment option. A local Tri-City, British Columbia vet offers some information on ozone therapy in this article.

What Is Ozone?

Ozone is oxygen with an extra boost. Or, technically, an extra molecule. Regular oxygen molecules have two oxygen atoms, but ozone has a third. That third atom doesn’t have a specific role, so it occupies itself by attacking cells that are damaged. The remarkable thing is that ozone only affects damaged cells. Healthy cells have a protective covering, which ozone can’t penetrate. Bacteria and viruses do not have this coating, which leaves them particularly vulnerable to ozone.

Uses

Ozone therapy can be used to treat a wide variety of medical issues in pets. Some of these include vision problems, head trauma, immunity issues, allergic reactions, cancer, gastro-intestinal problems, and respiratory issues. It’s often utilized to ease pain. It kills bacteria, viruses, and fungus, which is extremely helpful in and of itself. It also helps oxygenate damaged cells, which can help fight disease and infection. It also helps improve wound healing, fights infections, and improves immunity. Ask your vet for more information.

Methods

Another great thing about ozone therapy is its versatility. It can be given in several ways. The best option, of course, will depend on the issue being treated. In some cases, it may be injected through fluids. It can also be infused into water, flushed through wounds, injected directly into tissue, or even mixed with gels or oils and administered topically.

Benefits

Ozone offers some wonderful perks. First and foremost? It’s completely safe. There are no known side effects. It can also be combined with other treatments.

That said, no treatment option is going to be right for every pet. Your furry friend’s care plan should be customized to suit their specific health issues and needs. That said, if you think your pet may benefit, go ahead and ask your vet for more information. It never hurts to learn more!
