Have you recently adopted a puppy? Congratulations! Puppies are super cute and lots of fun. Your little buddy will need some training to learn how to be a Very Good Boy. A Coquitlam, British Columbia vet goes over some puppy training tips below.
Don’t wait to start your canine pal’s petucation. Training should start the day you bring the little guy home. Housetrainng and crate training can both be done alongside obedience training. In fact, these things work well together.
Dogs can learn over 100 different words and phrases. You don’t need to teach your pooch that many commands. However, it’s important for little Fido to learn basic obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Down is also very useful. Work on one at a time. (Tip: you may find it easiest to start with Sit, as most dogs pick it up very quickly.)
It’s important for little Fido to enjoy his training sessions. The best way to do that? Treats! Use small portions to avoid overfeeding your furry friend. Also, don’t work with your canine pal when you’re feeling stressed or down. Dogs are very intuitive. Your adorable student may quickly pick up on your mood, and may have second thoughts about enjoying school.
Our canine companions tend to really thrive on set schedules. Try to work with little Fido at roughly the same time every day.
Little Fido doesn’t have a very long attention span, and may get bored with long lessons. Keep it short and sweet. Even a few five-minute sessions a day will be beneficial.
It’s easy to forget that pets don’t understand the nuances of human language. Little Fido won’t necessarily know the difference between ‘Sit’ and ‘Sit down!’ Always use the same words or phrases for vocal commands.
You probably won’t have much luck getting your furry pal to focus if someone’s grilling burgers in his classroom. Try to pick times and places without a lot of distractions.
Don’t think of training your puppy as a chore. It can be both fun and cute, and is also a great way to bond and spend time with your new canine companion!
